About Timothy Johnson

Timothy Johnson is a Brooklyn-based composer, pianist, and educator, and the founder of Dreamsong Music Lab — a membership-based music space and creative community for both kids and adults.

Through Dreamsong Music Lab, Timothy designs programs that blend traditional musicianship with modern creative tools, classes, workshops and events in songwriting, improvisation, recording, ear training and composition. His educational work extends into Dreamsong Books, a fantasy-based method series for beginning pianists that reads like a story, and teaches improvisation, composition, and music reading for beginning kids and adults alike.

As an artist, Timothy releases music under his solo content creative project SweetPotae, a self-produced body of work where he writes, performs, and produces piano-forward songs and videos featuring synths, drums, and vocals. He has released several albums as a bandleader with Music by Gestalt, and contributes original music for film, session work, and collaborative projects. His compositional experience spans analog synthesizers, small string and vocal ensembles, jazz groups, and conducting, reflecting a wide-ranging and flexible musical voice.

In addition to composing and performing, Timothy works as a video editor and audio engineer from his home studio in Brooklyn, creating music videos, short-form content, and recordings. He performs regularly in bars around Manhattan, staying connected to live audiences and the energy of New York City’s music scene.

Timothy holds a Performer-Composer MFA from CalArts (2018) and a BM in Jazz and Contemporary Performance (Piano) from California State University, Fullerton (2012).
